Polygon
Digitizer Help
This
extension extends the capability of ArcViews polygon digitizing.
The capabilities include:
- The ability to enter attribute values during digitizing.
- The ability to allow the user to select which fields in the theme values will be entered.
- Automatic creation of a unique ID for each record.
- The incorporation of logic so that adjacent polygons, islands and discrete polygons can be
digitized using the same button. This helps avoid overlaps and slivers in the polygon
data.
Note: This extension has only been tested with ArcView
3.1 and 3.2 running on Windows 95/98 and Windows NT operating systems.
Loading
the extension onto your computer
Using Windows Explorer, copy
the PolygonTool.avx file into the /Esri/Av_gis30/Arcview/Ext32 folder.
Typically this folder is on the C: drive.
Loading the
extension into ArcView
In ArcView, select the "File"
menu item in the project window and click the "Extensions"
option. A dialog box showing a list of available extensions are shown.
Check the "B.I.T.S. Polygon Tool" extension and then press
the "OK" button.
Using
the extension
In the
View window, a "Polygon Tool" menu item should have appeared.
Select the "Start Polygon Tool" option to start the application.
The following dialog box should appear.

Every button on the application should be grayed except for the Help button. Create a
new polygon theme or load a polygon theme into the view. Make the theme editable. The
application should now look like this:

Entering data as you digitize
If you
want to enter data as you digitize, push the "select fields"
button. A list of available fields in the shape file will appear. Select
the fields that data will be entered in and press OK. Before you start
digitizing, make sure that the "Add values to selected fields"
radio button is selected.
Note: If the "Add values to selected fields" radio button is picked and there are no fields in the shapefile the application will return an error.
Also note that there are certain field names that cannot be populated by this application.
These field names are:
1. shape
2. ID
3. Area
4. Perimeter
5. Date
6. Xcoor
7. YCoor
8. Poly_ID
This version of Polygon Tools does not support the input of data into date fields other
than the date field described below.
Automated
population of attributes
If either
the "Add values to default fields" or the "Add values
to selected fields" radio buttons are selected, three fields will
be created and populated automatically. These fields are:
1. Poly_id
2. Area
3. Date
The POLY_ID field is populated with a unique ID number for the record. The number is
determined by determining the largest number currently used in the field and adding one to
that value. A minimum number of 100 is used.
The AREA field is populated with the area of the polygon in the map units of the view.
Note that the area is calculated after each polygon is digitized. If the polygon is
changed, the area field is not updated.
The DATE is the current date (the date the polygon was digitized).
Select the "Add no field values" if you do not wish any fields to be
populated.
Digitizing
Polygons
To start
digitizing, press the "BARR" button. This will start the digitizing
tool (similar to pressing the "Draw Polygon" button on the
button bar). Start digitizing the polygons. Double click on the last
point to complete the polygon. The application will determine if the
polygon should be snapped to an adjacent polygon, is an island within
existing polygons, or is not connected to any other polygons (a discrete
polygon). The application uses most of the same logic as ArcViews
polygon tools (polygon draw and draw line to append polygon). The exception
is that this application will create true islands. You do not have to
use the "Subtract Features" option in the edit menu.
If you need to undo an edit, just press the "Undo Change" button. You may
have to press the button several times if you are manually or automatically entering
attribute values to the themes table.
If used correctly, this application will create a theme that should not have any
slivers or polygon overlaps. However, there may be some cases where overlaps and slivers
may occur. It is highly recommended that the theme be inspected for such occurrences.
New
Features in Version 1.1
Automatic
Panningf you wish to have the application pan automatically, select
the Automatic Panning checkbox. As the mouse approaches the edge of
the view display, the view will automatically be recentered to allow
for uninterupted digitizing.
Color and Width of Digitizing LineThe color and width of the
line created when digitizing can be modified by selecting values from
the Color and Line Width drop down lists. These values can be changed
at any time, even while digitizing a polygon.
Layout Table Wizard
Help
This extension creates a button on your layout tool bar and works similar
to the legend wizard that is included in ArcView 3.1.
Note: This extension has only been tested
with ArcView 3.1 and 3.2 running on Windows 95/98 and Windows NT operating
systems.
Loading
the extension onto your computer
Using windows explorer, copy
the TableWizard.avx file onto the /Esri/Av_gis30/Arcview/Ext32 folder.
Typically this folder is on the C: drive.
Loading the
extension into ArcView
In ArcView, select the "File"
menu item in the project window and click the "Extensions"
option. A dialog box showing a list of available extensions are shown.
Check the "B.I.T.S. Layout Table Wizard" extension and then
press the "OK" button.
How
to Run Table Wizard
After loading the TABLE WIZARD in your project, select the
"TABLE WIZARD" tool button and then click your mouse on the
layout where you want the table placed. A dialog box appears that will
give you a list of current tables in your project. Select the table
from the list. The application provides options to select what fields
you want to display, what field you want to sort by, the font size,
and the order you want to display the selected fields.
Note: You must have a selection set made before the table will be placed
in the layout. You can query the table from the dialog box by using
the query tools shown.
Caution: This application creates a graphic
that does not have a dynamic link to the table. You must recreate the
table graphic in the layout if you want to display changes made in the
table.
