Water:
River and Stream Analysis

Whether you're looking to lessen impacts on a trout stream or are interested in removing an aging dam, Barr can help. We offer services in stream and river classification, assessment, monitoring, and restoration. We have performed numerous studies to evaluate stream and river erosion, sediment deposition, and physical habitat. We use stream and river analysis results to:

  • Identify trends in water quality
  • Isolate possible sources of water quality degradation
  • Provide options for improvement

Barr also makes ecological use classifications based on physical habitat evaluation, stream flow, dissolved oxygen concentration, temperature, pH range, and presence of toxic compounds. Our experience with trout streams includes evaluating the impacts of large-scale development on designated trout streams by:

  • Constructing and calibrating regional hydrologic models
  • Reviewing the physical requirements for trout habitat and legal implications of trout stream designation
  • Conducting field inspections to evaluate habitat suitability
  • Making recommendations to modify the existing stormwater management practices to minimize the impact of runoff on stream temperature
  • Assisting watershed districts with stormwater management planning to minimize impacts to trout streams

Our services include:

  • Analysis of hydrologic processes including precipitation, runoff, and water supply forecast
  • Hydraulic modeling of river flow
  • Collection and analysis of sediment transport and bed material samples
  • Flow gaging
  • Water quality sampling
  • Water quality data collection and laboratory analysis
  • Analysis of effects of urban stormwater runoff on stream temperature
  • Biological assessments of fish, invertebrate, periphyton, and macrophyte communities
  • Physical classification of rivers, creeks, and streams
  • Erosion inventories of streams and rivers
  • Recommendations for improving the water quality of rivers, creeks, and streams
