International Oil Sands Tailings Conference 2008

Barr has been selected to present paper at the 2008 International Oil Sands Tailings Conference in Edmonton, Alberta, which will be held from December 7 to 10. The conference is sponsored by the University of Alberta's Oil Sands Tailings Research Facility and the Canadian Oil Sands Network for Research and Development.

The paper covers the use of "Tremie/Diffuser as a Tool to Dredge and Place Tailings." It will be presented by Barr's Mike Costello, Dean Myers, Dan Nesler, and John Horton; Walther Van Kesteren of Deltares; Blair Penner of Petro-Canada in Calgary, Alberta; and John Rowson of Areva Resources Canada in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Fifth International Conference on Remediation of Contaminated Sediments

Barr has been selected to present two papers at the Fifth International Conference on Remediation of Contaminated Sediments, which will be held in Jacksonville, Florida on February 2-5, 2009. The conference is sponsored by Battelle Memorial Institute.

One of the papers is titled "Stakeholder Interests and Ownership in Remedy Selection," and it will be presented by Barr's Michael Costello and Eric Hedblom, along with Michael Bares of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. The paper describes a unique and successful approach for obtaining stakeholder buy-in for a complex sediment remediation project. An abstract for the paper can be viewed here.

The other paper is titled "Air Quality, Case Histories of an Emerging Issue for Contaminated Sediments." It will be presented by Barr's William Flynn, Michael Costello, Charles Gantzer, and Todd Fasking. It summarizes four case histories of remediation projects involving emissions or odors from contaminated sediments. The abstract can be viewed here.

Geotechnical Instrumentation Course—March 2009

Barr geotechnical engineer and vice president Aaron Grosser, P.E., will speak on the fully grouted method of piezometer installation at a course on “Geotechnical Instrumentation for Field Measurements.” Offered at the University of Florida in Cocoa Beach, the course will run March 15-17, 2009, and will feature engineers, geologists, and technicians whose work involves performance monitoring of the geotechnical features of civil engineering projects.
