Barr staff to lead three technical presentations at SME conference

April 17, 2014

Barr will lead three technical sessions at the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration – Minnesota Section conference April 22-23 in Duluth.

On Tuesday afternoon, geotechnical engineer Travis Davidsavor, PE, will discuss best practices in rock removal. “Utilizing Pre-split Blasting Techniques in Iron Ore” discusses Barr’s work for a mining client to improve highwall geometry and stability and to increase ore recovery by using small-diameter drill holes and pre-split blasting.

Also on Tuesday afternoon, senior water resources environmental engineer Christie Kearney, PE, will speak on  “Water use in mining and creative mine water management solutions.” Christie will focus on innovative ways mining companies are recycling water and reducing the use of it.

Wednesday morning, senior process consultant Dan Palo, PhD, will discuss manganese mining in central Minnesota. “Process Development for Manganese Production from the Emily Manganese Deposit” will describe Barr’s work in evaluating the technical feasibility of upgrading this deposit to manganese metal (steelmaking) and manganese dioxide (battery material).
