construction of US Highway 53 bridge completed

September 19, 2017

As part of the US Highway 53 relocation project, the Minnesota Department of Transportation recently completed the state’s tallest bridge by deck height. The project, led by Kiewit Infrastructure Co. with assistance from Barr and Veit & Company, Inc, involved moving the highway to cross an inactive iron-ore mine pit—approximately 300 feet deep and 1,000 feet across—on the east side of Virginia, Minnesota. Two bridge piers support the decking between the abutments, which are founded on the rock highwalls at the sides of the mine pit. Barr provided monitoring services for the foundations and pit highwalls.

Photos of the project during construction (left) and completed (right) are below. Recent articles on Minnesota Public Radio News and KARE 11 highlight the history and challenges of the project.
