closed for 5 years, rebuilt Highway 210 re-opens

October 4, 2017

Five years of planning and work to rebuild a scenic highway in northeastern Minnesota damaged by flooding culminated with a grand re-opening on October 4. A section of Highway 210 near Jay Cooke State Park had been closed since June 2012 when more than 10 inches of rain fell, saturating the steep slopes above the highway.

Barr was part of the design-build team (with Veit and SRF Consulting) for the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s $21.3-million project, which repaired and stabilized more than 70 washed-out or damaged sites on or adjacent to Highway 210. We conducted geotechnical investigations of the failed slopes, developed stabilization designs and a long-term monitoring system, and provided environmental compliance assistance to support construction.
