Barr’s Jennifer Entwistle speaks at “Year of the Engineer” kickoff

January 19, 2018

On January 18, the Science Museum of Minnesota kicked off its “Year of the Engineer,” aimed at spurring interest in the field through related events and activities across the state. Representing the American Council of Engineering Companies Minnesota chapter, Barr’s Jennifer Entwistle spoke to those assembled about her background and career as a woman in engineering.

A senior structural engineer, Jennifer noted she learned at an early age that the work of engineers surrounds us. “My father taught me that engineers design the houses we live in and buildings we work in, they design the cars and roads on which we drive, they even ‘design’ the food we eat,” she said.

The Science Museum’s CEO, Alison Brown, pointed out that the year-long initiative focuses on helping students and adults see that engineering is fun and envision themselves in related careers. Nationwide, the need for qualified applicants is great. In Minnesota, the number of jobs in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) has increased three times faster than non-STEM jobs.
