dam assessment conducted using unmanned aerial system

August 31, 2018

Barr’s team responded to Xcel Energy’s request to conduct an assessment of a portion of the Horseshoe Spillway Dam at the St. Anthony Falls Hydroelectric Facility in Minneapolis, Minnesota. However, the area of concern was not readily accessible by foot, and high flows on the Mississippi River made boat access unsafe. The team’s solution was to conduct the assessment using an unmanned aerial system (UAS).

From across the Mississippi River, on a scenic overlook in Water Power Park, Barr’s team recently launched a UAS (DJI Phantom 4 Pro). The UAS made several passes near the dam to collect high-resolution photographs and videos—while complying with Federal Aviation Administration regulations. The photographs and videos serve as a visual inspection and are being used to develop a 3D representation of the dam wall.
