Barr Engineering is seeking a wastewater engineer to join its Minneapolis office and undertake challenging and progressive work focused on water and wastewater treatment facilities for industrial and municipal clients as well as groundwater treatment systems for remediation projects. Project assignments may include working as an individual or as part of a project team to assist with any of the following tasks: mass balance calculations; bench testing of physical, chemical or biological treatment unit operations; modeling of chemical and biological processes; conceptual and detailed engineering including plans and specifications for construction of treatment technologies; evaluation and troubleshooting of new or existing systems; and preparation of technical reports. Responsibilities may also include development of proposals, scopes of work and budgets; communications, meetings and negotiations with clients and regulatory agency personnel; internal team coordination and staff mentoring; and overall project management. This job may require occasional out-of-town assignments.

NOTE: Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. Participation in an OSHA mandated medical surveillance program will be required and safety training will be provided before being assigned to work on these sites. Applicants must be able to work in locations that feature the rough terrain typical of construction sites and to enter and work within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil, Environmental, or Chemical Engineering.
  • 5 to 10 years of relevant work experience.
  • Strong technical skills in a wide range of analysis and design related to water and wastewater engineering.
  • Exposure to work in a laboratory setting including bench scale testing and wastewater analysis.
  • Strong technical and problem solving skills, excellent communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in building working relationships and leading and working with multidiscipline teams.
  • Willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedules to meet project and client needs.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the country without the need for sponsorship
  • Acceptable driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Civil, Environmental or Chemical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Registered Professional Engineer or ability to become registered within 6 months.
  • Working understanding of aquatic chemistry, environmental microbiology and aquatic toxicology.
  • Engineering knowledge and experience with industrial manufacturing processes such as petroleum refining and mining, and water treatment for industrial uses such as cooling water and boiler feed.
  • Experience in developing models for chemical and biological treatment processes using commercially or publicly available software packages such as BioWin and PHREEQC.
  • Experience assisting clients with Clean Water Act compliance.
