This position presents the opportunity to work on large, complex, and challenging projects with one of the leading regional consulting firms in the United States with a growing presence in Canada. The person in this position will work on multidiscipline project teams providing geotechnical engineering analysis and designs on projects primarily for the oil sands and potash industries. Project assignments may include preparing and overseeing geotechnical site investigation and soil mechanics laboratory testing plans, interpreting testing data and writing reports, estimating costs, providing geotechnical design, and performing geotechnical computer modeling. Project management activities will include responsibility for project deliverables, client communication, internal team coordination, mentoring junior staff, and financial performance on projects.

This individual will also have an opportunity to play a lead role in day-to-day client service and business development within the Alberta market. Business development activities may include developing client relationships, tracking marketing leads and project opportunities, developing proposals and presentations, and networking and working to inform clients of the full range of capabilities offered by the firm.

While the position is located in the Calgary office, fulfillment of the position responsibilities will require periodic travel.

NOTE: Applicants must be safety-conscious and able to work in locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction sites. Applicants must also be able to enter and work within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Safety training will be provided before being assigned to work on these sites.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS degree in civil engineering with a geotechnical emphasis
  • Five years of relevant work experience related to geotechnical engineering
  • Professional engineer certification or ability to obtain P.Eng. within one year
  • Three years of experience with the oil sands, petroleum refining, pipeline, and/or mining industries
  • Demonstrated project organization and management skills
  • Computer skills including word processing and spreadsheets (Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Demonstrated experience with geotechnical analysis and geotechnical computer modeling (GeoStudio)
  • Experience with geotechnical site investigation and soil mechanics laboratory testing
  • A flexible working style and willingness to occasionally modify personal schedules as required to meet project deadlines and client needs
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Acceptable driving record, because the position will include driving to conduct company business

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in geotechnical engineering
  • Ten or more years of relevant work experience related to geotechnical engineering in the oil sands industry
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
