Summary

Barr is seeking a mid-level environmental scientist or engineer to join its Calgary office and undertake challenging and progressive work on projects related to environmental impact analyses, environmental permitting, and compliance at industrial facilities.

The person in this position will work with the staff in the Calgary office and other offices to manage project teams, make and manage schedule commitments with clients on behalf of the teams, assign work tasks to project team members, review the work quality of team members’ work, provide feedback to employees on their work performance, and manage project budgets. Additional tasks include working on project teams to assist with completing environmental permitting, environmental compliance, and related technical assignments related to air quality, water quality, and waste management.

You may be asked to prepare environmental impact analyses, emission inventories, chemical mass balances; contingency plans, certificate of approval applications, technical and economic feasibility studies for pollution control equipment and processes, environmental media sampling, and written reports. Assignments may also include working with approval agencies and working on-site at client facilities.

NOTE: Applicants must be able to work in locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and enter and work in facilities with limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. Safety training will be provided.


Minimum Qualifications

  • BS in chemical, mechanical, or environmental engineering or related scientific degree
  • Five years of relevant experience in environmental impact analysis, compliance, or permitting
  • Project management and leadership experience with complex projects
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with project team members and clients
  • Demonstrated ability to fulfill time commitments and to do whatever it takes to meet the service requirements of clients
  • Strong technical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to build working relationships and work in multi-disciplined project teams
  • A flexible working style and willingness to occasionally modify your schedule to meet project deadlines or client needs
  • Self-initiation and motivation with an emphasis on client service and growing a career in environmental consulting
  • Acceptable driving record


Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of experience working with provincial and federal air regulations for certificate of approval applications
  • Engineering knowledge and experience with industrial manufacturing processes, such as petroleum refining, mining or minerals processing, pulp and paper, or chemical production
  • Demonstrated organization and management skills
  • Aptitude for developing client relationships and business
  • Ability to identify problem symptoms and causes and develop and evaluate alternative solutions
