Summary

Barr is seeking an engineering student to work on project teams involving civil engineering and related technical field assignments. Project assignments may include civil design and analysis; AutoCAD/Civil 3D drafting and design; field sampling and data collection; preparation of construction plans and specifications; spreadsheet preparation; short report preparation; laboratory testing; and construction inspection/observation. The work may involve out-of-town assignments.

NOTE: : Some work locations may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites, or working on tall structures, or with industrial equipment. Safety training will be provided prior to being given work assignments on such sites. Applicants may be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of specific clients.


Minimum Qualifications

  • 3.2 / 4.0 grade-point average
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • At least two semesters of physics and three semesters of mathematics
  • Ongoing enrollment in civil engineering degree or related degree program
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Windows OS and Microsoft Office software

Summary

Barr is seeking a summer intern in its Calgary office to undertake challenging and progressive work on projects related to natural resource assessments during the 2018 summer field season. The intern will be based in Calgary but will work throughout Alberta and British Columbia. This will be a full-time temporary position.

Under supervision of a senior ecologist and other project managers, assignments will include working as part of a project team to assist with a range of tasks related to environmental assessments. Work will include conducting pre-development environmental field surveys (such as wetlands, fisheries, vegetation, or wildlife); preparing field reports required for project implementation, and assisting in wetland field evaluations and delineations. The summer intern will work with other Barr scientists and engineers, as well as with regulatory staff and clients. Much of the work will be in the field; however, office work (data assembly and analysis, report and memo preparation, etc.) may be involved.

NOTE: Job assignments may involve work in locations featuring rough terrain, steep slopes, wetlands, and dense vegetation. The candidate must also have the ability to work on construction and industrial sites, entering and working in facilities with limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Working toward a university degree in environmental engineering, ecology, botany, wildlife biology, or a related natural resources field
  • Must have at least one full-time semester of undergraduate or graduate course work remaining after internship
  • GPA of at least 3.2/4.0
  • Completion of at least six courses in engineering, environmental sciences, or related subjects
  • Familiarity with and ability to follow standardized environmental survey protocols
  • Directly-related experience with one or more of the following survey types:
    • botanical (wetland and upland plant ID, wetland delineation/classification),
    • fisheries (collecting biophysical baseline fisheries data, fish inventory, fish habitat assessment) or
    • wildlife (focus on birds, mammals and herpetiles)
  • Able to work at least 40 hours a week during the internship

  • Flexible working style as the field assessments may require overtime, weekends and variable hours (early mornings, late nights)
  • Ability to travel to and work in remote locations for one- to two-week periods

The person selected for this position will work on project teams involving structural engineering and related technical assignments. Project assignments may include structural design and analysis, preparation of plans and specifications, report writing, cost estimating, and construction inspection/observation.
