Bringing back waterfowl and trout to a Nebraskan creek

Near Mitchell, Nebraska, construction is wrapping up on the redesign of Dry Spotted Tail Creek to improve habitat for fish, upland birds, and waterfowl. The project represents the work and contributions of large group of stakeholders, including Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Nebraska Trout Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, Nebraska Environmental Trust, Platte River Basin Environments, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife.

The goal of the project, which realigns the creek as it approaches the North Platte River, is to create a wetland area that attracts waterfowl and to establish a coldwater habitat for naturally reproducing rainbow trout.

Barr and our teaming partner, 5 Smooth Stones Restoration, worked with the stakeholders to help define project objectives, develop preliminary design alternatives, and select a final design. We then prepared a final design, including the design of river structures for improved fish habitat, and provided construction oversight.
