Heart of the Iron Range

Hibbing, in the heart of Minnesota’s Mesabi Iron Range, is home to the world’s largest open-pit iron-ore mine, the childhood home of Bob Dylan, and year-round outdoor activities for locals and visitors alike. Opportunities abound for outdoor recreation with lakes and rivers for fishing and paddling, state and county land for hunting, and trails for hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and much more. Barr acquired Abe W. Mathews (AWM) in 1994, gaining engineering and design expertise and an established base from which to continue serving clients on the Iron Range. Founded in 1952, AWM served the needs of the taconite mining industry, and later, energy- and power-related industries, non-ferrous mining, and pulp and paper industries.

In the decades since, Barr’s Hibbing staff has continued to provide technical excellence and the highest quality of client service to clients in northern Minnesota, across the nation, and around the globe. Our integrated team of engineers (mechanical, electrical, civil, structural, geotechnical, minerals processing, metallurgical, wastewater, environmental, and water resources), scientists (wetland ecologists and environmental consultants), and technical specialists (GIS specialists, environmental permitting and compliance specialists, environmental/air quality specialists, engineering technicians, and field and structural inspectors) continues to grow to serve clients in mining and mineral processing, power and utilities, fuels and pipelines, refineries, manufacturing, and natural resources industries.

Active in our community

Barr’s Hibbing staff members are active in a wide variety of professional organizations such as the Hibbing Chamber of Commerce; Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME); Iron Mining Association; Mineland Vision Partnership; Mining Minnesota; and Engineers’ Club of Northern Minnesota. Additionally, our engineers are active in their discipline-related professional societies and pursue professional engineering registrations in multiple states where our clients operate.
