Air emissions and environmental compliance work depend on access to a large, interconnected body of asset, calculation, and regulatory information. A large oil and natural gas producer uses its Asset and Compliance Tracking System (ACTS) to manage air emissions information and environmental compliance obligations across facilities and equipment in the United States and Canada. With thousands of assets, years of operating history, billions of records, and information connected across multiple business systems, answering a compliance question could require specialists to navigate complex records and piece together context from several sources.
We were asked to develop a more direct way for teams to access and work with this information. Barr created an AI agent that allows users to ask questions in plain language and receive organized, traceable responses grounded in live ACTS data and organizational best practices.
The agent supports a range of interactions, from answering straightforward questions about assets, calculations, and compliance requirements to carrying out complex, long-horizon agentic workflows. These may include identifying unusual data patterns, evaluating the effects of regulatory changes, and helping update compliance reports. In each case, the agent connects users with the relevant data, calculations, and supporting context needed to review the results and determine appropriate next steps.
Barr designed the workflow to preserve the client’s established data controls and governance practices that support reliable compliance work. By making complex information easier to find, review, and trace, specialists can spend more time interpreting the information and applying their professional judgment. The result has been improved data quality, greater capacity for subject matter experts to focus on high-value work, and more accurate and efficient compliance reporting.
