When the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency determined that a baseline ecological risk assessment should be conducted at a former wood-treating site in northern Minnesota, Barr was hired to assist with the assessment, including an investigation of lakes, tributary streams, wetlands, native plants, fish, and other aquatic and terrestrial species.

Barr and a partner firm developed the ecological-assessment work plan, negotiated with the agency, and then implemented it. More than 470 acres of aquatic and terrestrial habitat were investigated and 390 samples were analyzed, including samples of water, sediment, soils, wild rice, other plants, fish, mussels, crayfish, and earthworms. Sediment-bioaccumulation studies and toxicity testing were also conducted. The results of the ecological risk assessment have been accepted by the USEPA.
