environmentally friendly stormwater-management system helps revitalize neighborhood

When Minneapolis city officials decided to revitalize a four-block section of West 54th Street, they turned to Barr for a stormwater-management system that was cost-effective, environmentally focused, and sensitive to the neighborhood's unique characteristics. We designed a multifaceted system with permeable concrete pavement, catch-basin sumps to trap sediment, and skimmers to absorb oil. With no room to capture and treat stormwater above ground, underground rock chambers were installed to hold and filter runoff.

Completed in 2009, the system has proven more effective in managing runoff than expected. In one early capacity test it handled three times the amount of water predicted to create overflow. The reconstructed street also features parking bumpouts to manage traffic flow, bike lanes for easy access to nearby trails, and trees along the boulevard to provide shade.
