low-impact site development

low-impact site development
Ramsey Washington Metro Watershed District

stormwater systems and landscape tailored to site

The Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District set out to build a "green" office that would demonstrate principles of environmental stewardship and serve as an example of low-impact site development. As the district’s primary engineering consultant since 1975, Barr was asked to help evaluate the site.

We worked closely with the building's architect to design the infiltration-based stormwater management system. We also helped our client meet the project's budget by recommending simple and economical stormwater best management practices that would have the greatest impact on water quality and aesthetics such as using rainwater gardens, a green roof, native prairie grasses and wild flowers, and a pervious asphalt parking lot. The project design also incorporated recycled and recyclable materials, as well as materials from local sources.
