Phalen Village wetland restoration

Phalen Village wetland restoration
City of St. Paul

habitat restoration provides transition to urban neighborhood

The Phalen Shopping Center was built in the early 1960s on a filled wetland once known as Ames Lake. The strip mall’s crumbling buildings were demolished to restore the wetland, and the City of St. Paul hired Barr to design the wetland park to connect Lake Phalen to the Mississippi River.

We restored hydrologic function to the recreated basin, reconstructed wetland soil profiles, and introduced a diversity of native plants. We identified a long-term maintenance routine, which is critical to the successful restoration of the urban habitat. We also designed a traditional park to frame the wetland habitat and create play space.
