Clyde Iron Works redevelopment assistance

Clyde Iron Works redevelopment assistance
Clyde Industrial Park, Inc.
Duluth, Minnesota

turning an old foundry into a source of community pride

For more than 100 years, the Clyde Iron Works property was home to heavy industry. A developer bought the site in Duluth’s Lincoln Park neighborhood in 2003, hoping to revitalize the area while retaining its historic character.

Barr helped the developer and the Duluth Economic Development Authority win four brownfields grants from the USEPA and the state department of economic development that covered more than $2.2 million in environmental investigation, cleanup, and redevelopment costs. We conducted environmental site assessments and investigations, performed a geotechnical site evaluation, prepared response action plans, provided construction oversight, and obtained regulatory approvals and liability assurance for the developer's lender. Response actions included soil excavation and management and vapor-intrusion controls.

The site now features a multi-use sports pavilion with a 1,400-seat hockey arena as well as a concert venue, restaurant, and sports-training facilities. The project won the 2012 Rescape Award for community impact from Minnesota Brownfields, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the voluntary investigation, cleanup, and redevelopment of brownfield sites.
