practical environmental management system helps mine reach standards

When an iron mining operation on Minnesota’s Mesabi Range wanted to achieve registration to the Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Specification (OHSAS) 18001 standard while minimizing redundancy and improving efficiency in its environmental management system (EMS), Barr built a practical EMS that fulfilled those goals and met the standards of ISO 14001.

To develop the mine’s EMS, Barr performed an ISO 14001 gap analysis identifying instances of non-conformance and opportunities to build on the site’s existing environmental regulatory-compliance programs. From this, a detailed ISO 14001 implementation plan emerged identifying and prioritizing specific tasks, responsibilities, and level of effort needed for the mine to achieve conformance with the standard.

Barr helped identify and prioritize the site’s environmental “aspects and impacts” and develop value-added environmental objectives and targets. We supported the development of standard operating procedures, forms, and work instructions, as well as a software application to support training management and corrective and preventive action. ISO 14001 awareness-and-implementation training was provided to a cross-functional team representing mine management, union employees, and a variety of departments.

Barr conducted an OHSAS 18001–focused gap analysis to develop the occupational health and safety (OH&S) system necessary to achieve registration. The gap analysis yielded a detailed OHSAS 18001 implementation plan that identified nearly 175 specific action items, including development of comprehensive risk-assessment processes, training programs, and operational control procedures.

The resulting system reflected the client’s culture, increased employee engagement, and deepened understanding of roles and responsibilities in protecting the environment, themselves, and their co-workers.
