ecological approach brings landscape harmony while emphasizing values

The College of Saint Benedict knew that its campus landscape could present visitors with a first impression of the college’s values, priorities, and care; an ecological approach to landscape planning would bring ecological harmony to the campus and fulfill core aspects of Benedictine values. Compared to traditional, high-maintenance landscapes, implementing such an approach reduces the use of gasoline, irrigation, fertilizer, and pesticides; time spent on consumptive management practices that suppress nature; and overall implementation and maintenance costs.

Barr worked with the college using an ecological approach to develop a landscape master plan. Our work entailed a site and cultural analysis, ecological analysis, facilitation of a discovery process, and landscape master planning, including implementation and management strategies.

The master plan will result in not only a beautiful and comfortable place to study, live, and work but also a landscape better able to adapt to extreme conditions.
