Mechanical engineering

Barr’s mechanical engineers work closely with our clients and project teams to identify practical ways to decrease capital costs, reduce maintenance, protect the environment, and extend your facility’s lifespan. Whether it requires analyzing an existing system’s efficiency and proposing modifications or designing a new system from the ground up, we develop engineering solutions that meet specific industry, facility, and client needs.

Our mechanical engineers design bulk-materials handling systems for the transport of dry products ranging from powders to run-of-mine ores. Barr also designs HVAC and plumbing applications to support industrial processes, improve efficiency, and augment workers’ health, safety, comfort, and well-being. Using our understanding of how air-quality regulations and air-pollution-control requirements affect industries, we help control dust and fumes efficiently and effectively from coal, chemicals, grain, silica sand, taconite, volatile organic compounds, welding, and wood.

From compressed air, water, steam, and natural gas to viscous liquids, paper stock, fuel oils, chemicals, and slurries, Barr designs new or evaluates existing industrial pumping and piping systems. Our engineers utilize a full toolbox of computerized analysis software for flow modeling and pipe stress analysis, as well as three-dimensional design tools to provide solutions that are optimized, constructible, and meet or exceed the needs of your project. With an extensive background in modifications to existing systems, Barr can customize solutions to fit within existing physical constraints and integrate with the existing system.
